Expedition White Sharks Guadalupe Island
Guadalupe Island (Mexico) is the top destination for great white shark encounters. This small volcanic island located in the Pacific 240 kilometers (150 miles) off the west coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula outperforms both South Africa and Australia with shark-seeing consistency and watching conditions. Only Guadalupe Island can boast shark viewing in beautiful clear blue water with 125 – 150 foot visibility. We recently identified 171 unique great white sharks in the bay where we stage our double decker submersible cage diving operations which guarantees unforgettable encounters.
Diving with Sharks
We offer a rich and natural experience of shark encounters on these trips by descending down to 30 feet where great white sharks naturally spend their time. We don’t need to use chum at depth; the sharks are already there. We have seen up to six great whites at once circling the cages. Without chum these great whites are more relaxed, exhibit MUCH more curiosity, and come in MUCH closer to the cages. Best of all, our cages are double-deckers, which means you can venture onto the upper deck and outside the bars to truly go face-to-face with great white sharks out in the open. It is an unforgettable rush when a great white looks at you from 50 feet away and then swims over for a very close look.
For your safety, all diving is done using a hookah system – otherwise known as surface supplied air – and our custom designed double decker cages. These cages are designed to provide maximum protection for you AND for our sharks. It is vitally important that the sharks are never affected or injured during their interaction with us.
Mexican park regulations require that you stay within the cages at all times including keeping your arms, hands and cameras inside. Feeding the sharks and the use of camera strobes and lights is strictly prohibited. Please do not contaminate the beautiful clear blue waters of Guadalupe with suntan lotion or any other contaminants.
You will be accompanied by one of our divemasters on all dives for your safety and to increase your chances of shark sightings. You should be ready and dressed in your wetsuit 10 minutes before your scheduled cage time. We recommend DUI weight harnesses and approximately 40 lbs of lead depending on your weight and type of wetsuit. Please see any of our divemasters for assistance. Note that a 5 – 7 mm wetsuit is usually adequate to keep you warm but we do have hoods, hooded vests and extra gloves available for loan if needed.
For your additional safety, each cage is equipped with backup sets of scuba gear for each diver in the exceptionally unlikely event of a problem with the hookah system. The cages are normally entered and exited through an upper hatch but there is also an emergency escape hatch painted red if needed. This hatch must remain closed during normal operations.
July to November Diving with great white sharks and going face-to-face with them at 30 feet is an unforgettable experience but also very different than most people imagine. We believe in natural interaction and instead of using oil and blood and chum at the surface, we use submersible cages with open top decks to descend down to where the sharks naturally congregate. Natural interaction results in more sharks, more interaction and unforgettable up close encounters. July and August features rowdy gangs of male sharks acting just like groups of teenage boys! Female great whites start showing up in September. October and November features the enormous 18 foot dominant females affectionately known as “Big Momma’s”. Over 171 individual great whites have been identified in the bay that we dive in.
Your Guadalupe Trip Starts Here
Voyages are typically 5 nights/6 days. Number of shark-dives on the trip is virtually unlimited. On the first morning upon arrival we do warm-up dives and afterwards the pool is always open. Each submersible cage will take 3 divers + 1 dive master, 3 times a day. Current record is 31.5 hours of cage time over 3 dive days. Cages close at 5 p.m. on the last dive day to get ready for the steam home.
We also offer 10 and 15 night Guadalupe combo-trips. 10 night trip combines diving with the great white sharks at Guadalupe Island with scuba diving in the giant kelp forests of the California Channel Islands and San Benito Islands and other remote islands on the Pacific side of Baja California. 15 night expedition in November combines Guadalupe and San Benitos with the famous giant mantas and dolphins of Socorro Island.
Your trip begins in San Diego or Ensenada where you will board the Nautilus Explorer or Nautilus Belle Amie (AKA Where’s John). Both are custom designed for divers to the highest possible level of comfort and safety with a layout that utilizes every square foot of available space. Everything is first class and certified to the same exacting international SOLAS and ISM standards as the largest cruise ship.
Exceptional Modern Boats
All Guadalupe adventures are available on the Nautilus Explorer or Nautilus Belle Amie. Both ships are custom built, stabilized, beautiful white boats built to SOLAS standards. Each have accommodations that suite all preferences ranging from a luxurious premium suites with their own entry to the deck to triple and quad occupancy staterooms.
An unforgettable experience. Picture it – dive to 30 feet and go face to face with great white sharks in crystal clear, calm and sheltered water. Typically outstanding visiblity of 125 feet plus.
Plethora of Sharks. We use submersible cages with open top decks to descend down to where the sharks naturally congregate. There are 120 individual white sharks identified so far just in one bay that we dive in (shark Bay!). See up to 5 sharks at any given time.
Our treat! Relax in the hot tub or enjoy a drink on the sundeck. Snacks are always offered all day long. Have fun at the wine & cheese party, and at night head up to the sun deck and enjoy a movie under the stars. Don’t forget our great selection of spirits and wine from around the world.
With over 25 years of operational experience, we have learned that the safest alcohol policy is to restrict guests from bringing their alcohol onboard. We provide a wide selection of beer, wine and alcohol from the ship’s bar at every reasonable prices. Please contact our operations office 60 days prior to your trip for a variation from this policy otherwise the crew will politely but firmly restrict all guests on your trip from bringing their own alcohol onboard.

2 Tank Dive Experience in Cancun & Riviera Maya
EXCELLENT Based on 242 reviews Ilana S2024-07-25Verified Awesome experience with Squalo Divers Juan and Alejandro! Squalo Divers in Puerto Morelos was perfect! We signed all forms online the night before so all we had to do was show up and suit up! They met us at The Dive Bar on the beach right next to our Oceanfront hotel and took care of everything from Start to Finish! Juan was an excellent dive guide who clearly has a lot of skill and knowledge! He made me feel right at home on the reef and we had some fun taking photos of the marine life and some beautiful green sea turtles snacking on sea grass! Meanwhile Alejandro helped my cousin to Snorkel and made her feel safe and helped her to have fun! It was her first snorkel experience in 40 years and she had a great time. I would 100% dive with them again! Abigail S2024-07-25Verified The gift of the sea Patient, skilled, and very flexible! My cousin is an experienced scuba diver, and I am a very inexperienced snorkeler. We were able to go on the same boat and each had an amazing experience. Juan and Alejandro were fantastic guides, and helped us spot sea turtles! Highly recommend this shop. Xander2024-03-06Verified Spectacular If you are in Cancun/Cozumel/Playa, do not go anywhere else but here! In almost 3 decades of diving, this outfit is the most professional, intelligent and kindest team, I have ever met. Way above and beyond the call of duty , amazingly organized, and just always ahead of the ball game. I’m super impressed and I will always come back to dive with this team. Thank you Juan (the boss). Konstantin Z2024-02-27Verified Amazing Advanced OWD Course I did my Advanced Open Water certification with Squalo Divers in February 2024. It took 3 days to complete and contained 6 dives in total, 2 dives a day. I chose a program with Cavern and Wreck dives as elective adventure dives so the course was more expensive compared to what other dive centers in Cancun offer. But it was totally worth it. First, a week in advance, I contacted the shop owner Juan, we discussed the planned schedule, and after the payment I received access to PADI online course, which I had to complete before going in water. It was great that I had a whole week to complete the theory and could concentrate on practical skills during the dive days. On the first day, we went Cavern diving. In the shop I got the full gear including 5mm wet suit and dive computer, which I’ve never had a chance to use before. They told me a little bit of history of cenotes in the area with interesting facts, shared a few tips about diving in caverns and then, me and the instructor Alex, went on their car to a place near Puerto Morelos, where we dove in Kin-Ha and Maravilla cenotes. It was out of this world experience, completely different from diving on reefs in the ocean, which I will never forget. The excitement and thrill of diving in dark water with overhead surface, and even going through the cloud of sulfur! Both dives were around 30m deep and took about 30 minutes (which was limited by my rapid usage of gas, and I believe if I had been more relaxed, we could stay longer). On the second day we went to dive on a reef in Puerto Morelos to sharpen the buoyancy and navigation skills. At the shop Juan showed me techniques to improve my buoyancy and trim, and described how to use a few natural methods to navigate underwater. As this time we were to dive in warm water, I opted for 3mm shorty wet suit. I also got a wrist compass and the same dive computer. After an hour driving we arrived in Puerto Morelos, boarded the boat and soon were in the water, where I practiced navigating by sun and current, controlling my buoyancy and using different kicking techniques. Both dives were about 13m deep and lasted for 40-50 minutes (again limited by my usage of gas). And all of this while watching a lot of colorful fish and coral reefs! On the final day we went to C-56 wreck, which is also in Puerto Morelos, to practice deep diving. Beforehand Juan recommended me to try Nitrox for these dives to have longer no stop times and enjoy the wreck in full. At the shop, I paid a little extra for two tanks of EANx32, received my gear, listened to theory on using Nitrox and we went to Puerto Morelos once again. We did 2 dives on the same wreck, which were about 25m deep and 35 min long each, with 1hr surface interval on the boat. At the bottom, Juan showed me how colors change with depth, which was very informative and nice to observe with my own eyes. We swam inside the wreck with our flashlights which was really cool! Later we swam around the wreck to look at the abundant marine life: manta rays, barracudas, lion fishes, a turtle. We even noticed a small shark on the horizon! These were the dives that impressed me the most. Over these three days I experienced and seen much more than I had over the last year, gained important practical skills and had fun! In conclusion, I want to say that I have dived with a few dive centers located in Cancun’s Hotel Zone before, but Squalo Divers proved superior to them. Starting with good location in downtown Cancun, which was closer to the place I stayed and so cheaper to get to by taxi. Continuing with very personal approach in teaching, which included many theoretical and practical details on diving techniques. And finishing with professional staff, who are passionate about diving and love what they do. I was positively impressed with everything there and can really recommend these professionals to dive with. Jorge T2024-01-28Verified Squalo Divers, excellence and Professionalism Excellent Professionals, dedicated and passionate about what they do, personalized guidance, combines theory and practice, 100% recommended, many thanks to the Squalo Divers team, very nice experience. Valeria P2024-01-18Verified Incredible Diving Experience with Juan! I cannot express enough how incredible my diving experience was thanks to Juan, an exceptional teacher who guided me through this experience. From the first moment, their professionalism and passion for diving was evident, creating a safe and exciting environment. What really stands out about Juan is his ability to transmit the necessary tools to dive with confidence and peace of mind. Their explanations were clear and precise, and made even the most technical aspects of diving seem accessible and exciting. I loved the diving sites in the sea that we visited to certify ourselves, spectacular!! Juan not only knows the places perfectly, but also has a deep respect for marine life, instilling in us the importance of preserving these environments. I loved that safety was always the number one priority. Before each dive, he took the time to thoroughly explain safety procedures and check equipment. This attention to detail and focus on safety contributed significantly to the peace of mind I experienced at every moment. Super recommended! Kalyan S2023-12-28Verified 10 of 5 stars 10 out of 5 stars. The experience was nothing short of incredible. Highly recommended for anyone who is new to scuba. It's my first time doing scuba and I can't swim properly. Juan is a gifted in instructor. His instructions and pool training made us feel quite comfortable even before we got to the ocean. We did two dives in the ocean and saw some amazing fish and coral reefs. The first dive was in a shallower water and helped us acclimatize to the ocean whereas the second was in deeper water where we saw more interesting animals. To top off this experience, Juan is such a humorous person, it made our day. Gabriel M2023-12-01Verified Perfect Ok so I started my open water course in Jamaica and still needed to get 2 more dive in to complete it. Talk to Juan a few weeks before my trip to Mexico and sent him all my information I had from the other two dive to finish up a PADI open water. Juan was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Mexico and diving. He made you feel comfortable from the start. He didn’t rush anyone in the group. I had so much fun on my first dive the I booked two more the following day. Oh and to top it off he took us to eat some really good athletic food. Idk if he does that for everyone but I wasn’t complaining haha You will not be disappointed with Squalo Corey D2023-08-21Verified Experiencing the aquatic world of the Caribbean coast off the Yucatán Peninsula. Had an absolutely fantastic time diving with Squalo Divers over two seperate days. Two dives off Cozumel (wall dive & reef drift dive), then another two off Puerto Morelos (wreck dive & reef dive). The team at Squalo were friendly, hospitable, and super accomodating. They happily catered to larger capacity tanks for myself and Nitrox for the wreck dive. Good banter, great times and a team that are passionate about diving and giving you the best experience possible. Next time I find myself in this area of the world, I’m definitely booking more dives with them. Wish I could rate the experience and service higher.
